John Michael Carroll (April 27, 1823—May 8, 1901) was a member of the United States House of Representatives from New York. ==Life and career== John M. Carroll was born in Springfield, New York on April 27, 1823.〔Nelson Greene, History of the Mohawk Valley, Gateway to the West, 1614-1925, 1925, page 622〕 He attended Fairfield Seminary and graduated from Union College with a degree in civil engineering in 1846,〔Union College, (Union College, 1795-1895 ), 1897, page 514〕 where he was a member of the Kappa Alpha Society〔Kappa Alpha Fraternity, (A Record of the Members of the Kappa Alpha Fraternity ), 1892, page 50〕 and was elected to Phi Beta Kappa.〔Union College, (Centennial Catalog ), 1895, page 71〕 After college he taught school while studying law and attained admission to the bar in 1848.〔Cuyler Reynolds, (Hudson-Mohawk Genealogical and Family Memoirs ), Volume 1, 1911, page 342〕 He practiced in Fonda and Broadalbin, and relocated to Johnstown in 1862.〔Lyman Horace Weeks, John Hampden Dougherty, (Legal and Judicial History of New York ), Volume 3, 1911, page 405〕 A Democrat, he served as Fulton County District Attorney from 1859 to 1862.〔Thomas William Herringshaw, (Herringshaw's National Library of American Biography ), 1909, page 566〕 In 1870 he was elected to Congress and served one term, (March 4, 1871 to March 3, 1873.
